Beloved South Pennsylvania Teacher Robs Bank to Pay Casino Game Debts

As Pennsylvania’s Gaming Control Board deliberates over the allocation of 14 gambling licenses, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported a sad story of a man whose life was torn about by a casino game addiction.

Alvin Jumpp, a former history teacher at South Philadelphia’s Audenried High School, is currently serving out a five- year, three month sentence at a prison in Minersville, Pa., after being arrested for a series of bank robberies. Jumpp had robbed the bank, he said, after a casino game addiction caused him to fall into hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt.

Jumpp had accrued $310,000 in debt, and had maxed- out 16 different credit cards, because of a casino game addiction that caused him to play in high roller casino game rooms several times a week.

Jumpp’s casino game debt led him to sink into a deep depression and to begin to drink heavily. At that point, he decided to take the desperate measure of robbing his neighborhood Farmers & Mechanics Bank, where he had been putting his money into a savings account for nearly 15 years. He robbed the bank three times before he was caught.
